I would like to thank the prosecutor for accusing me of a "Call to Resistance". Resistance is my second favourite word. If there is something that moved forward the human race and society through history, it is precisely resistance and the call for it. Albin Kurti, 6th July 2007 |

Albin Kurti is a nonviolent activist. He is one of the leaders of the Movement for Self Determination, (Lėvizja VETĖVENDOSJE!) which advocates that the status of Kosova be resolved by a referendum, as an exercise of the right to self-determination. He opposes the current negotiation process arguing that it will lead to a compromise, contrary to the will of the people of Kosova to be free of Serbia. He argues also that the UN should set a deadline for its departure in order to create the conditions for a true democracy. He was arrested on 10th February immediately after a demonstration in which UN police fired rubber bullets at nonviolent protestors, killing two young men and injuring over 80. The international prosecutor reported that the deaths on 10th February were a criminal act perpetrated by a Romanian special police unit, and that the police operation was characterized by a breakdown in chain of command and ambiguous orders. No one has been prosecuted for these crimes and UNMIK allowed the Romanian police to leave Kosova. Albin Kurti has been transferred indefinitely into house arrest since 13th July 2007. His trial began on September 19th, but the judge refused to allow him to address the court to explain why he rejected the panel of judges. Six Kosova newspapers published in full the forbidden speech he was denied the right to give. The trial is now pending a further decision. Albin Kurti is a UN political prisoner. He is being tried by international judges directly appointed by the UN SRSG in Kosova and his indefinite detention allows the UN to prevent the organization of nonviolent public dissent and mass demonstrations. These International Judges and Prosecutors have total immunity from the law they apply to others. Furthermore, International Judges and Prosecutors in Kosova take only the cases of war crimes or those of interethnic violence and Albin Kurti does not fall into either of these categories!
